An Ode to National Defence Academy

An ode to National Defence Academy, Pune

Where the sweet chirping of sparrows woke us up
To sit in the dewy lawn with a teacup.
Where the peacock ran into the woods dense
on hearing our footfall.
But not before we caught a glimpse
Of the prettiest bird of all.

As we went to our school cycling,
we could see the cadets marching.
Some to their classes, others for some training,
with sprightly steps and all the while musing.
About their future, their challenges and parents dear,
because they have come from very far to be here.
To train themselves and defend their beloved country,
to maintain her pride so that she always remains free.
The mountains on all sides are like guardians strong and tall,
ensconcing this academy which is the finest of all.
The Sudan Block a mighty structure in red,
was the hallowed area where the young guns read.
Their lessons taught by professors learned
who loved their subjects and their "boys" no end.
Through the telescope on the lofty Science Block
to see the Hailey’s Comet we had flock.
The Peacock Bay which was a picturesque getaway
on weekends, on bicycles we would come this way.
The weekly movie shows at the auditorium,
or sometimes at the open air stadium.
After the swim a few icecreams at the mess,
while talking with friends was pure happiness.
On a full moon night I have once seen,
chitals strutting about in my garden green.
Their spots shining in the moonlight silver,
the scene etched in my mind forever.
Countless memories reside in my mind,
of a paradise which is one of its kind.
So I pray for this splendid Academy,
a haven to live, love, laugh and proud be.
